The nationality
* To express «where are you from» you can use two structures:
SOY DE + COUNTRY (país): Soy de Colombia
SOY + NATIONALITY (nacionalidad): Soy colombiana
While in English the nationalities are written with capital letters, in Spanish they remain with small letters.
In Spanish, there are two genders: masculine and feminine. When we are saying where somebody or something is from, their nationality will vary according to whether they are male or female.
PAÍS | MASCULINO | FEMENINO |
Alemania | alemán | alemana |
Argentina | argentino | argentina |
Brasil | brasileño | brasileña |
Canadá | canadiense | canadiense |
Chile | chileno | chilena |
Colombia | colombiano | colombiana |
España | español | española |
Estados Unidos | estadounidense | estadounidense |
Inglaterra | inglés | inglesa |
Japón | japonés | japonesa |
México | mexicano | mexicana |
Israel | israelí | israelí |
There are different endings when talking about nationalities.
Nationalities ending in -o in the masculine changes to -a for the feminine.
Nationalities ending in -a, -e or -í in the masculine do not change for the feminine.
Nationalities ending in a consonant in the masculine, add -a for the feminine. If there is an accent on the final vowel in the masculine, they lose this in the feminine.
